How Does Tubal Surgery Work?
There are 4 basic types of tubal surgeries (which can be performed laparoscopically or in an open abdominal surgery format):
Tubal reanastomosis or tubal ligation reversal: This surgery is performed in order to reverse a tubal ligation surgery. A tubal ligation is a sterilization procedure that is performed by cutting, clamping or block fallopian tubes. On the other hand, during a tubal reanastomosis, the blocking material is removed and the cut segments are reattached to the rest of the tube. Hence allowing for a woman to then try for a pregnancy again.
Salpingectomy: This surgery involves removing one or both of the fallopian tubes.
Salpingostomy: If there is fluid build up in your fallopian tubes, your surgeon will make an opening on the fallopian tube to let it out.
Fimbrioplasty: Fimbria are a fringe of tissue at both ends of the fallopian tubes. In a fimbrioplasty, these fringes are rebuilt to allow for better pick up of the egg.
What Should I Expect From This Procedure?
Tubal surgery can be performed as a treatment for a variety of reasons. Before undergoing the procedure, make sure to consult with your surgeon to determine your eligibility.
It is important to keep in mind, that the surgeries do not guarantee a successful pregnancy, if that is what you are looking for. If you have not been able to get pregnant for over a year, set up a follow-up appointment with you surgeon to undergo further testing and decide a future plan of action.
In other cases, make sure to follow all post-op guidelines and attend any follow-up appointments as needed.
